5 good reflexes to lower your bill

On August 26, 2022, the wholesale price of one kilowatt hour of electricity broke a new record, reaching 1,000 euros against about 86 euros in the same period a year ago. Here are some tips for saving money.

In a house, heating is the element that consumes the most energy. According to data from the Environmental and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), the average annual consumption of electric heating in a house is about 4 312 kilowatt hours (kWh). Here are 5 ways to reduce the cost of your bill.

1- Make sure your home is well insulated

For Florence Clément, head of information at ADEME, it is therefore on the isolation of housing that the efforts must be directed. “Few people know, but there is a public energy renewal service all over the country called France Renov.” The specialist recommends making a free appointment with a technical consultant near you. His role is to help and support those who wish to isolate their homes. “We come with the photos of his accommodation, the invoices and above all we do not start the work without having made an appointment, with the risk of losing a very important financial aid”.

2-Reduce your hot water consumption

After heating, the consumption of an electric kettle for hot water is the second largest consumption of electricity in a home. According to ADEME, a 200-liter tank consumes on average 1 676 kWh per year. This is an annual cost of € 285 with an electricity price of € 0.1740 / kWh.

According to Florence Clément, there are several solutions to consume less hot water. “The first reflex is to start by checking the temperature to which the tank is heating. Heating the water to 50 degrees is more than enough. Then, you can install water aerators on the taps. This will allow you to limit water consumption. . general and therefore that of hot water. You can buy it in all DIY stores for less than 10 €. “

3- Defrost the freezer

After heating and hot water, the third item of expenditure for electricity is absorbed by household appliances. The appliances that consume the most electricity are those that need to stay on without interruption, such as the refrigerator and freezer. For Pascal Jacquemin, manager of the appliance repair company SAV Somatelec in Witry-les-Reims, the advice is simple: “Don’t let it get frozen! You shouldn’t wait for a heavy layer of frost to settle to start defrosting. Ideally, do this every 3 months.” It should be noted that, for several years, a new technology has been offered by manufacturers : the no frost. This is an automatic defrost system offered on some new models. And here too, as with the hot water tank, you need to adjust the temperature of your freezer. “To be sure that the food is frozen at the heart, a temperature of -18 degrees is enough”, adds Pascal Jacquemin.

4-Use the eco programs in the dishwasher and washing machine

To save money, sometimes it is enough to take a few minutes to read the instructions for use of household appliances that run on electricity. In the kitchen, Pascal Jacquemin recommends using the dishwasher’s eco mode. “Of course, it will take longer, a 3 hour cycle instead of 1 hour and a half. But the intensity will be less important, so we will consume less energy.” The advice also applies to the washing machine, to which you can apply another reflex: wash the clothes at a low temperature. ” In most cases, washing at 30 degrees is more than enough“, adds Mr. Jacquemin.

5-Unplug any appliances

In recent days, calls have multiplied to disconnect appliances such as internet boxes or televisions. However, for Florence Clément, we must remain cautious with these reflexes. “Of course, this will allow you to control your energy bill, but it doesn’t affect your overall electricity bill much.” Therefore, it is estimated that disconnecting an Internet box at night can save money € 30 in a year, or € 2.5 per month. “They are small gestures that, on the scale of a family, do not represent much, but if we multiply by the number of families in an area, this can lower the overall consumption of electricity”.
