Champions League – 1st matchday: Chelsea fall to Dinamo Zagreb (1-0)

The Blues skip the entry into the Champions League. On the Stadion Maksimir lawn, Chelsea fell into the trap of Dinamo Zagreb (1-0) and confirmed their delicate start to the season. Despite the net possession throughout the game (61%), Thomas Tuchel’s players never looked really dangerous and were punished on the counterattack by Mislav Orsic (13th). The Londoners will host Salzburg the next day, while the Croats will move to the Milan lawn.

Chelsea had a first period as the start of the season: not very convincing. Quickly, the Blues got their foot on the ball and confiscated the skin from the Croatians. However, Thomas Tuchel’s players were not dangerous in approaching Dominik Livakovic’s goal and confirmed their defensive fever, having suffered at least one pawn in each of their last five league games.

Dinamo Zagreb did not hesitate to punish the Blues. On the counterattack, after a nice header by Bruno Petkovic at the level of the center line, Mislav Orsic spun resisting the assault of Wesley Fofana and punches the ball perfectly against Kepa (1-0, 13th). Shortly after the half hour, Arijan Ademi asked the Spanish goalkeeper, who has been in official competition for the first time since March, with a powerful and distant shot but failed to counter-attack before half-time.

Without clues, Chelsea have not overturned the game

In the second half the London club did little better. Faced with a very solid Croatian wall, the Blues shot the ball in front of the opposing surface going left to right and right to left, like handball players. Without ever finding the fault. Only Reece James wowed the Stadion Maksimir with a powerful shot from a tight angle at the post (86th).

Apart from a shot from distance by Stefan Ristovski hit by Kepa and sent to the crossbar (56 °), the Croatians are content to give the ball to the Blues and to be solid in defense, leaving them very little space. In front of a maddened audience, Ante Cacic’s men never gave up until the final whistle and achieved the first feat of this new edition of the Champions League.
