Corentin Moutet stopped by Casper Ruud in the round of 16 of the US Open

There are no more French players in the US Open 2022 men’s tournament. Corentin Moutet took too long to deliver a truly worthy opposition from his first round of 16 Grand Slam. Almost resigned, very early in the game, he recovered a little but suffered, against the wise and solid Casper Ruud, a defeat in four sets (6-1, 6-2, 6-7 [4]6-2 in 3h20).

His two break points at the beginning of the game, in the end, were just an illusion. Because after having tied with a match everywhere, Corentin Moutet did not get a single game point in this first round during which the rankings (7th for the Norwegian, 112th for the French) were perfectly respected. Ruud also scored the best point of the game very early, an area in which, if necessary, Moutet could have started as a favorite.

But it was the Norwegian, who validated the first break and led 3-1, who slipped a splendid right of way at the end of the match, between the referee’s chair and the net post, below the level of the wing. However, Moutet returned the favor early in the third round, this time on the backhand, and a little less spectacular.

“Not fighting at all”

Justine Henin, on Eurosport

These were the two highlights of an unbalanced match between a player in the top 10 who always knew what to do and another talented who never found the path of grit in a lasting way. As often, Moutet let himself be overcome by frustration, such as performing a dozen push-ups after a foul at the start of the second set or receiving a penalty point for a violent ball. Often positioned too far, often sideways on his initiatives (such as these few climbs in the sock), the Frenchman showed no form of rebellion for two hours. “ He’s not fighting at all, it’s a dream turn for Casper Ruud at this stage of the tournament.perfectly summed up Justine Henin, rather cautious on Eurosport’s microphone.

Ruud less serene in the tie-break of the third set

Could the long break, at the end of the first two rounds, so that the two players change from head to toe, change the trend? Moutet tried to put more intentions into the second half but, even though Ruud gave far more points for four games, his legs seemed unable to follow. It was his seventh game of the tournament, including qualifiers … “I can’t do it, I have no solution”he pitched to his coach, Laurent Raymond, after being broken at 2-2 in the third set. “Do you think he can win, do you believe it or not? “ he asked him instead when he returned to 4-4. Faced with a less serene Ruud, he won the right to the tie-break crossed with the handbrake by the Norwegian, dominated by 7 points at 4. Led 6-1, 6-2, 4-2 a few minutes earlier, Moutet was therefore really entitled to a fourth set!

What would have happened if he had made his fourth entry break point? Gradually, Ruud regained his wits and, although he seemed bothered by the unusual number of shots he was missing, he regained the advantage and did not give up, from the break at 2-1. “It was more difficult than the scoring suggested at the beginningRuud said into the stadium microphone; luckily I proved once again capable of dictating the game in the fourth set. ”

This US Open will allow Corentin Moutet to return to the top 100 in eight days, around 85th place in the world. In the quarter-finals Casper Ruud will face Matteo Berrettini (14th), scorer in five sets (3-6, 7-6 [2]6-3, 4-6, 6-2) by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (39th).
