Creator of CoffeeB, Café Royal declares war on aluminum capsules, a true ecological scourge. This new pod takes the form of a compressed coffee ball without packaging and 100% compostable. An unprecedented innovation.

The novelty of Café Royal is destined to make big waves in the world of coffee. The Swiss manufacturer in fact announces an alternative to plastic and aluminum capsules, which are particularly polluting. CoffeeB has the shape of a compressed coffee ball, covered in a very thin 100% vegetable bag. It is therefore designed without plastic or aluminum and can be composted after use. The CoffeeB retains the simplicity of a capsule since it adopts an individual format: a measuring cup = a coffee.

The brand ensures that the taste properties of coffee are preserved, it must not remain in the open air at the risk of oxidation. If the vegetable film that wraps the coffee helps in its conservation, the pod box also participates. Made with molded fibers, it would keep the product fresh for nearly 14 months and three months once opened. Always with a view to redevelopment, the packaging ends up in the yellow bins, directed to separate waste collection.

Each box can hold nine coffee balls and the range is available in eight varieties: espresso, strong espresso, long, long strong, restricted and decaffeinated, as well as two certified organic recipes.

The most ecological pod

With this innovation, Café Royal declares war on the plastic or aluminum coffee capsule. And it was time! Remember that coffee is on the podium of the most consumed drinks in the world. The French are very fond of it as almost 60% consume it daily. In total, this is one billion capsules used and thrown away every year. In the enddespite the recycling circuits, only 25% of them will be recycled, while aluminum is 100% recyclable.

To make things better, in 2019 Nespresso, Nestlé and JDE (Jacobs Douwe Egberts) created the Aluminum Capsule Recycling Alliance, which aims to simplify sorting and recycle 100% of aluminum capsules. For this, collection points have been set up and the recycling channel has been developed. If this initiative goes in the right direction, we can only say goodbye to the innovation of Café Royal. The absence of waste is better than recycled waste!

How the price table works

The problem with this coffee ball is obviously its compatibility with devices. Currently each machine works with a specific, flexible, aluminum or plastic capsule. Nobody can host CoffeeB.

Café Royal therefore offers a coffee machine specially designed for its new pods: the Globe. In off-white or matte black, it can accommodate the nine balls on top waiting to be eaten. A 1.3-liter water tank accompanies the machine 37.3 cm high, 15.3 cm wide and 26.7 cm deep.

To get a drink, the Globe starts by moistening the coffee ball in order to soften it. The machine then presses the pod, pierces it and injects the water into it. This is when the coffee is extracted at a pressure between 7 and 12 bars (the pump can reach a peak of 19 bars).

Café Royal markets the coffee machine and its pods in stores, notably at Auchan and Carrefour, as well as online on retailer sites such as La Fnac, Darty and Boulanger. It is already possible to buy the Globe for € 179. Capsules are available from € 3.49 per box. Each coffee therefore costs less than 39 cents, identical to the price requested by Nespresso.
