Europa League – European return to win: Guessand gives a tightrope win in Nantes against Olympiakos (2-1)

FC Nantes have successfully returned to Europe! The Canaries perform in front of their fans by winning against Oympiakos (2-1). Ludovic Blas shone in midfield. A decisive passer-by for Mostafa Mohamed in the first period, the Frenchman continued to shine despite Samuel Moutoussamy’s reduction of the opponent’s score against his field, following a mistake by goalkeeper Alban Lafont after the interval. It was Evann Guessand who released Beaujoire with a powerful whim right at the end of cooldown. With this victory, the Canaries are in first place in group G, level on points with Friborg.

Almost 20 years later, Nantes returns to Europe

There are victories that go down in history. FC Nantes have put things right with the European Cup tonight, 18 years after leaving it. In a glowing Beaujoire stadium, Antoine Kombouaré’s players were able to raise the level of play to beat Olympiakos, starters in the biggest European games. A 2-1 victory, won in extra time, and here are the Canaries at the top of their group, with the now assumed desire to do something beautiful in this competition.

Mohammad showed the way

Antoine Kombouaré was able to count on his entire group before facing Olympiakos. The French make strong choices: move to 4-2-3-1, Sissoko and Simon on the bench. Immediately more enterprising, Nantes players offered their first chance of the match through Denis Appiah (2nd).

Nantes’ assaults never stopped and following a very nice collective movement, Ludovic Blas was able to beautifully serve Egyptian striker Mostafa Mohamed (32nd), who rushed to face a totally apathetic Greek defense. The former Galatasaray striker also took the opportunity to score his first goal in the Europa League.

Blas, the X factor

The rest of the first period confirmed the ease of Nantes against the Greeks who have not yet entered the match and unable to catch the attacking midfielder Ludovic Blas. On returning from the locker rooms the situation changed. Carlos Corberan’s men started with better intentions, and it was almost logical that they had managed to equalize after a mistake by Nantes captain Alban Lafont on a corner, slipping the ball over the knee of poor Samuel Moutoussamy (50th).

Not beaten, far from it, the Canaries push by multiplying the centers, but neither Girotto (73 °) nor Sissoko (74 °), who came into play, find the fault. The locals even thought of scoring at the end of the game thanks to Evan Guessand, but the flag was raised for offside position by Mohamed. While the two teams were on their way to a draw, Ludovic Blas had not yet finished his work and on a cross whipped from the right he proposed the liberation goal to Guessand (90 + 3), which overwhelmed the 33,000 Nantes fans.

Antoine Kombouaré and his family made a resounding return to the European Cup, expelling an Olympiakos side accustomed to the Champions League. The French coach holds his reference match and officially launches his season. A must-see against Lorient this weekend in the league if the euphoria of the European Cup is set to continue.
