After seeing his boat sink, the survivor – who could not swim – was rescued after an 11-day ordeal by another fishing boat.

The story is hardly credible. And it is undoubtedly one of the most bizarre survival stories. As reported by the Brazilian press, a Brazilian fisherman who left Oiapoque, a border town in French Guiana for three days of work in August, was shipwrecked off the coast.

After filling up on fish, Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues sees cracks in his wooden boat. The 44-year-old man, who cannot swim, evacuates the water that infiltrates from all sides but sees his boat sink little by little, irreparably, and decides to improvise.

Test the setup of a freezer on the boat and jump into the makeshift dinghy. “When I saw that there was no way out, I took the freezer and left“, He confided in an interview with the chain TV Record.

To save

But the fisherman, adrift in the middle of the ocean, can only hope to wait for an impromptu help. He waits, dismayed, in this providential freezer for more than 11 days. “Then the water began to penetrate. And I evacuated it with my hand. I started to despair“, He later reported.

About 400 kilometers from the coast, according to the Brazilian press, Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues has to face another fear, that of sharks. “I thought I was being attacked by sharks because there are many curious fish in the open sea“.

Eventually, as it was about to break, a Surinamese fishing boat locates the floating object and decides to get closer. The weakened man finally hears the sound of the engine just when the fishermen, having not seen it, decide to leave. “I got up and waved my arms for help“, Testifies.

“A true miracle!”

But upon arriving on the coast of Suriname, the undocumented Brazilian is arrested by the police. Fortunately, the Brazilian authorities organize his return to the country a few days later, by plane.

How could he survive after so many days of neglect? Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues estimates that he has lost 5 kilos and, above all, that he suffers from thirst. In poor health after he landed on the coast, quarantine was already much better when he returned to Brazil, police said. “He was very thin, weak, but still very conscious. The injuries suffered, mainly related to the sun and the heat, were already much better“, Explained the representative of the federal police Luís Carlos Porto.

Back home after this unimaginable trip, Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues thanked Providence: “That refrigerator, for me, was God. A true miracle!
