Host country of this final phase of theEuro BasketL’Germany had to rub shoulders Greece from Giannis Antetokounmpo hope to reach the semifinals of “his” competition for the fourth time in its history, and the first time since 2005.
Against this formidable Greek team, which for the tenth time in its history dreamed of reaching the semifinals of the European Championships, and for the first time since 2009, the Mannschaft managed to stop the course of teammates of Giannis Antetokounmpo (31 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals).
Thanks to the superb performance of Dennis Schröder (26 points and 8 assists), irreproachable in his role as national leader, and thanks to an excellent second half, dominated by head and shoulders.
Shocked, Greece turns its back thanks to Giannis
In front of the hot audience of the Mercedes-Benz Arena, this quarter-final starts very strong anyway. This is demonstrated in particular by the insolent 3-point success of all the Germans: 4/4 at the beginning, then finally 8/10 over the entire first quarter!
Despite the aggressiveness of the opposing defense, and above all the two (or even three) captures, Giannis Antetokounmpo did not dismount in this hostile climate. In power, suddenly is one, the “Greek Freak” proves admirable in keeping the Greeks in touch. Altruist also does not forget to serve his unmarked teammates, behind the arch or in the paint.
Yet, after ten rather paced minutes, Germany are ahead (31-27). The meeting, more and more physical, is rebalanced, but the Mannschaft remains ahead, thanks to his devilishly effective attacking collective.
Without panicking, Greece maintained a respectable gap with the opponent, snatching several offensive rebounds essential to do so. Prized for their 3-point prowess, Giannoulis Larentzakis and Andreas Obst fight back in a trigger duel but, as time ticks by, Dimitris Itoudis’ players take over Gordon Herbert’s.
Several shots of the accelerator by Dennis Schröder are then needed to relaunch the Germans at the end of the time, while Giannis Antetokounmpo and Tyler Dorsey lead the Greeks to the opposite field. Finally, on a basket (very) far from Kostas Sloukas’ siren, the visitors put two possessions in the lead at the interval (61-57).
Greek ship capsizes under 3 pt rain …
As at the start of the match, Germany returned from the locker room unplayable offensively, where they set a lot of pace, and especially in the defensive phase, where they clearly made a qualitative leap. Such an effective recipe necessarily leads to the score, as Greece collects a pungent… 20-1 in seven minutes!
Without a solution and unable to react, because mentally afflicted, Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family find themselves lowered on the board, while Franz Wagner and his companions are in a state of grace, in particular on 3 points. Despite the wall of defenders standing in front of him (he suffered a capture of five men!), The “Greek Freak” tried to wake the troops, in his own log of him.
But nothing helped: the gap widened at the end of the third quarter (83-71).
Giannis and Schroder expelled!
Without Giannis Antetokounmpo, briefly left to rest, Greece is trying to hold back the shock, indeed to recover. Unsuccessful, which quickly forced Dimitris Itoudis to return hers Super star Jostled, the “Greek Freak” struggles, but his teammates are in the hole, while the Mannschaft relies on a gala collective and continues to turn in all directions.
In the end, after long minutes in which the two teams gave up blow for blow, it happened the Germans triumphing in front of a raving crowd (107-96). Above all, just to drink to the end, Giannis Antetokounmpo was sent off five minutes from the end for a second unsportsmanlike foul. Note that Dennis Schröder will join him moments later, due to a second technical foul.
Too skilled (17/21 at 3 points, 18/21 at shots), too armed collectively (five players at 10 points or more) and simply too strong for the Greeks, Germany joins Spain in the semifinals of “their” Euro Basket .
