Killing in Canada: Myles Sanderson, the latest suspect in Sunday’s attacks, dies in turn

Epilogue in Canada, after Sunday’s massacre in which ten people were killed. Myles Sanderson, the latest suspect in fatal stabbings, died shortly after his arrest on Wednesday. “Immediately after his arrest, Myles Sanderson was in medical danger,” Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore told reporters, without providing further explanation for this distress. “He was pronounced dead in the hospital,” she added.

Shortly before, the police had announced the arrest of the suspect. “Myles Sanderson was located and taken into custody near Rosthern, Saskatchewan around 15:30 (21:30 GMT). There is no longer a public safety risk associated with this investigation, “provincial police said in a social media post.

Known to the police and justice for acts of violence, Myles Sanderson, 32, had already been wanted since last May for failing to comply with his judicial control. Police had been tracking him since Sunday, suspecting that he was responsible, along with his brother Damien, for one of the deadliest attacks in the country in recent years.

Ten victims still hospitalized

The victims were stabbed in 13 different locations in the province of Saskatchewan, in the center-west of the country. Ten people were killed and at least 18 others were injured in the indigenous community of James Smith Cree Nation and in the nearby town of Weldon. They are men and women between the ages of 23 and 78. Among the injured are a “young teenager” and 17 adults, according to federal police. According to the security forces, some victims were targeted while others were accidentally shot.

Two brothers from the region, Damien and Myles Sanderson, were suspected of wreaking havoc in this village and the next one on Sunday before fleeing. Since then, the authorities organized an extensive manhunt. On Monday, the body of Damien Sanderson, 31, was found with stab wounds near one of the killings locations. The circumstances of his death remain to be clarified, but he may have been killed by his own brother.

Ten patients were still hospitalized and three remained in critical condition, according to health authorities.
