La Vuelta – Remco Evenepoel collapses for the first time, Richard Carapaz wins the 14th stage

It is unprecedented. Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) failed for the first time in this Vuelta 2022 on Saturday. In the highest percentages of the Sierra de la Pandera (8.4 km at 7.8%), the Belgian lost the wheel of Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) then Enric Mas, while Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) started his gradually with these two for the victory of this fourteenth stage between Montoro and the Sierra de la Pandera (160 km). The Ecuadorian has finally resisted the return of the favorites to win by a few seconds, for the second time in a few days. Evenepoel kept the red jersey but lost time (52 “) on Primoz Roglic and (finally) showed some limits.

Until the end, this first weekend high mountain stage was undecided. But the Olympic champion, lagging behind overall, has shown he still has the juice to do well in this Tour of Spain. Starting with an escape that took some time to take shape, Richard Carapaz waited for the descent of the penultimate difficulty of the day, the Puerto de los Villares, to reach Luis Leon Sanchez in the lead.

From then on the two men were first picked up by Clément Champoussin (AG2R-Citroën) and Filippo Conca (Lotto-Soudal) before letting them go again on the ascent of the Sierra de la Pandera, which caused a lot of damage. On slopes with passages over 15%, Carapaz then flew alone towards the final victory. But behind, the fight between the favorites took shape quickly.

Evenepoel under pressure

Primoz Roglic places the first banderilla, unanswered by Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian would have been believed in the management, but it was actually his first failure since the start of this Vuelta. After Roglic, it was the turn of Enric Mas (Movistar) and then Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) to collect the red jersey. As a champion, the leader of the general classification then tried to lose as few seconds as possible, and his savings at the finish were less than a minute behind his Slovenian rival (48 ” + 4 ” bonus for 3rd place by Roglic). In the general classification, Evenepoel is therefore still in the red jersey, with 1’49 “on Roglic and 2’43” on Mas.

The suspense comes alive: an attack from Roglic and Evenepoel is broken

If it was clear that the Vuelta was not over yet and that this weekend promised to be decisive, it is now certain that Remco Evenepoel also has some weaknesses. The arrival of the day was at more than 1800m of altitude but the summit on Sunday will reach over 2000m. To see if the Belgian will be able to withstand the pressure of the air and that of his opponents.
