After acting several times in the RPG open, the French studio Spiders changes course and today presents Steelrising, a “Souls-like” action-RPG that sets its scene in the middle of the Revolution in 1789 in Paris. Forget your history lesson! Louis XVI relies here on his army of automatons to suppress popular effort. Okay, because you are a robot too. In this challenging adventure, you will have to do your best not to go crazy. So, Steelrising, the nice surprise for Elden Ring fans? It’s time for our verdict.

  • Tested on PS5 | Steelrising is available from 8 September also on PC and Xbox Series.

In the world of video games, there are studios that have made a license or a genre their specialty and others who like to vary the pleasures! For example, this is the case of the Spiders studio which, despite the love for open role-playing games, brings us on board today with Steelrising. An RPG, yes, but above all an action game that is part of the popular Souls-like genre (understand who is inspired by Dark Souls, Elden Ring). An important change of course that seems well negotiated. As mentioned above, French Revolution and the Army of Automata to meet here as Louis XVI wishes to repress the popular effort. For your part, you play “Aegis”, a cute robot sent by Queen Marie Antoinette in hopes of resolving the situation. A research that will guide you towards the spawns of the History of France and the hardly accessible machines.

Tourterobot capital, solid levels and graphics

Because yes, Steelrising is a “Souls-like” and therefore applies the specifics of the genre. On the sidelines of a challenging gameplay (which we will talk about later), the adventure takes the form of a succession of eight areas of a fairly acceptable size, with its share of killer robots, labyrinthine paths, shortcuts to unlock and items to collect. There is also a small metroidvania dimension as gaining powers later in the progression opens paths in previously visited levels. Slowly but surely you will cross Paris and its surroundings, from Montmartre to the Jardin du Luxembourg, choosing your destination from a map of the capital. Steelrising also offers secondary missions and secondary areas to explore. A good point, for a life that fluctuates between 4 and 8 pm. In each zone, you will gradually unlock checkpoints to reappear after a failure, as the genre requires. An oasis of peace where it will be possible to improve Aegis’s weapons and characteristics (Health, Strength, etc.) and spend “manes” to buy resources.

As we visit the capital of love, we have to say one thing. On the sidelines of a clearly perfectible technique, the action-RPG according to Spiders offers many beautiful environments thanks to a really solid artistic direction. Paris is illustrated here in a fascinating and haunted way. The cocktail between historical monuments and different atmospheres works really well. On the other hand, yes, we feel Steelrising could have provided more on this point and that’s a bit of a shame. The textures and 3D models are not the newest and there are some animation, collision and camera issues (without affecting the gameplay). But the fact is that these flaws are quickly forgotten. We let ourselves be carried away by the atmosphere, by the gameplay.

Three graphics modes for the price of one:

Steelrising offers three graphics modes. The first favors the resolution, the second the rendering of the graphics and the third the number of frames per second. On our side: We opted for the second choice, which offers nice graphics as well as a completely stable 30fps. To our taste, the framerate mode takes a little bit of the vibe that it has nice things to give.

Do you need some elbow grease? Quite ingenious gameplay

What would a good Souls be without gameplay worthy of the name? On this point Steelrising implements many things that are worth seeing. Obviously – as in any game of the genre – here you attack with the equivalent of R1 | R2 (for light | heavy blows). Each hit consumes stamina and when this resource drops to zero, you can no longer punch and dodge. But in Steelrising, when you are in this situation, Aegis does not stand by, it overheats! Then, to regain stamina, you can wait or inject yourself with a dose of coolant, dealing some damage at the same time as well as increasing your chances of being frozen in place by ice. A choice that can be quite important depending on your health, your resources, the opponent in front of you.

Steelrising – First Steps in Paris (Gameplay)

Nice ideas like that, Steelrising has others. Each weapon, in addition to being quite original (explosive mass, fan that opens in a spear) offers a powerful charged shot and a special ability that can be offensive or defensive (it is not possible to have a permanent shield). The icing on the cake, here you can wear it two sets of weapons at the same time and switch between them in the blink of an eye, with a simple button. Convenient to have a complementary duo in all circumstances, such as a blade on one side and a firearm on the other. Spiders also features secondary moves that deal elemental damage – Fire, Ice, Electricity – as well as variants when Aegis is in the air, after the jump. Among all the weapons, the offensive possibilities, the strategic choices, the Steelrising fights turn out to be complete and solid. Note that your choice of class at the start of the game only affects your base stats, and it’s entirely possible to make your own salsa during the adventure. In short, do as you want!

Crumpled sheet metal, school design with some flaws

There is something nice about Steelrising. We feel that the Spiders team has mastered Souls-like specs without forgetting to bring their own touch. Overall, the areas are all pleasant to navigate (plus a lot of verticality thanks to jumps and grabs) and regularly renew with action stages and hidden objects. Yes, we are not in the same category as recent FromSoftware games, but it doesn’t matter. In short, it’s a classic that works well. Finally, we only regret a level design that relies too much on closed doors, enemy gestures that are sometimes not legible enough, a bestiary that is too small. To our taste, we wouldn’t have said no to a ladle of defiance and more. By cleaning up the areas thoroughly and improving our character, we ended up doing a short work on the “Titans”, the main bosses of the adventure. It must be said that the offensive special move of each weapon can be used at will – as long as you carry ammo – and that you can also carry many healing items. There is clearly some balance to be reviewed. In spite of everything, a mistake can always be fatal and this has not affected our pleasure on the streets of Paris. Overall, we haven’t seen our fifteen hours of gameplay go by. However, this says it all.

Assistance mode for an à la carte challenge:

On Steelrising, at any time of the adventure, you can activate the Assistance mode in the options. Something to simplify your work in the event of a glitch with adjustable damage reduction, the ability to maintain the experience gained after a failure and even to speed up the reload speed of the resistance. A good thing that makes Steelrising accessible to everyone.

The great history of France, a welcome story

Again, we have not touched the scenery, a pleasant link that connects gameplay, levels and atmosphere. In Steelrising you will therefore meet great names in the history of the country (such as Lafayette or Robespierre) who will help you unravel the secret of the automatons! Without performing too much, the whole showa considerable writing effort and staging, with memories that will gradually teach you the destiny of the characters. Nothing flashy but just enough to give impetus to the adventure. All in all, the Spiders title puts everything it takes to seduce Souls-like fans on the table. Come on, let’s conclude.

Conclusion

Highlights

  • Original and pleasant universe
  • A beautiful artistic direction
  • Solid stages of action
  • “Souls” school but successful
  • Good game ideas
  • A compelling storyline
  • “Help” mode.

Weaknesses

  • A technique that is too backward
  • Balancing, revision difficulties
  • Collision problems – camera

Without ever excelling or establishing itself as a new benchmark in the genre, Steelrising is a solid Souls style that is sure to please fans of Dark Souls and Elden Ring. Yes, there are pros and cons everywhere! The technique is behind but the art direction wins hands down. The action stages are fun but lack challenges at the end of the adventure. The level design of the various areas is quite academic but works well. Despite everything, we immediately got carried away by this challenging action game, tinged with robots, French Revolution and History. If the atmosphere speaks to you and you like Elden Ring, you can go there without hesitation.
