Still unsuccessful in the league since the start of the season after the new draw against Clermont, Strasbourg are disappointing compared to what they showed in the 2021-2022 financial year. But after this prosperous period, the difficulties were rightly and logically foreseen.

The statistics, unprecedented since the arrival of Julien Stéphan in 2021, will not surprise anyone in view of the observed start of the season: at home, Strasbourg have not won any of their last four games (one defeat). Against Clermont in La Meinau this Sunday, on the occasion of the seventh matchday of Ligue 1, the Alsatians have in fact conceded the draw again despite an evident domination and occasions that should have ended in the bottom (two cross bars hit, in particular). Result: the RCSA has not yet won a single championship game, and remains stuck in the relegation zone in seventeenth position with five small points on the clock. But how to explain this difficult period in which the club has embodied one of the advertising hype The Frenchman in the financial year 2021-2022 finished in sixth place and three units from the podium thanks to an exciting game, all while the workforce has not changed much?

“Last year, maybe we were exaggerating …”

In fact, the reasons for this galley are different and varied. But even the half-mast performances, compared to the previous season, are not all that unexpected. Because taking a step back, it was rather the successes of last year that represented the anomaly. “If I take Lyon, Paris, Monaco, Lille, Marseille, Rennes, Nice, I add Lens … there are already eight teams of different caliber from the Racing Club de Strasbourg. We don’t play in the same field. Last year, sometimes we could have overreacted, everything worked out for ushe cleverly pointed to Dimitri Liénard at the very end of July, during a friendly against Liverpool. What we did last year was magical, extraordinary. But this is a completely different season. We hope to do something good again, but I think we will fight with ten teams to support ourselves as soon as possible. With the four descents and the cut linked to the World Cup, you have to keep your feet on the ground, not to believe yourself too beautiful or become gentrified. We are confident in our strengths, but from one season to the next nothing is the same. ”
A speech shared by his coach, Stéphan, who wanted to warn everyone before the start of the celebrations: “Last season is the last season and a new season is about to begin. We must not forget that we are the fifteenth budget of Ligue 1, that there will be four descents and that it is a dangerous season for many clubs including ours. It is a dangerous championship and we are part, like ten to twelve clubs, of the teams that will be affected by this fight. We should never forget this, at least in the first place. If we ever manage to extricate ourselves from it, we will try our best. It’s a difficult season, the games will be tough and busy. ”

A multifactorial context

Speaking of the two men, we must add some factors that justify this false start in terms of performance. Firstly, the failure (especially offensive) of the Strasbourg players since August is quite evident (especially compared to last season, once again): unlucky and imprecise in front, the Alsatians have the penultimate attack of the Hexagon (five goals scored ) in front of Ajaccio (three) while still getting many chances (one game with less than nine attempts, in seven days). This drop in efficiency is also explained by the simultaneous transfers of Anthony Caci (Mainz) and Frédéric Guilbert (Aston Villa), the quality of the center of the two pistons previously represented a sacred good. Furthermore, the wishes of some executives – such as Ludovic Ajorque or Alexander Djiku – who ultimately didn’t sign up for another club could psychologically enter people’s minds.

Finally, also from the point of view of absences, the RCSA is not very comfortable: against the Auvergne the list of wounded was for example as long as the reign of an English monarch (retreats of Thomas Delaine, Gerzino Nyamsi, Karol Fila, Eiji Kawashima and Liénard) without forgetting that Sanjin Prcić has been suspended. If he was very tasty and appreciated, the 2021-2022 vintage was also difficult to digest. So hard to digest. “We have automatisms, but last year there was a lot of mental wear until the last dayrecognized Liénard, a few weeks ago. The hardest thing will be to really immerse yourself in reality, and if you start out badly everything can go very quickly. Sure, we want to avoid staying on the last day, but it won’t be that easy. ” The long-term goal is known, however, and it is not about doing better than before. The short term is to seek success, as quickly as possible.
