At around 5am (local time), Tupelo police were informed that a plane pilot was flying over the city of nearly 38,000 people.

“The pilot has come into contact with the emergency services and threatens to intentionally crash into a Wal Mart,” said the statement from the city police without giving the pilot’s reasons. The evacuation of the supermarket and a nearby petrol station had been organized by the authorities.

The plane finally landed around 10:25 (local time). The pilot was arrested, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, about an hour’s drive from Tupelo, said. His motives remained unclear on Saturday night.

According to flight tracking site FlightAware, the aircraft is a Beechcraft King Air 90, a device nearly 11 meters long and with a wingspan of just over 15 meters.

The Mississippi emergency services have been on high alert all morning in the face of this situation defined as “dangerous” by the Tupelo police, who have asked residents to avoid the area.
