who are the competitors of the electric baby Jeep?

At the 2022 Paris Motor Show in mid-October, the Jeep Avenger will make its first walkabout. If he does not have the opportunity to fight, standing on the ground, with the technical cousin Peugeot e-2008 (4.30 m), and for good reason, the lion mark will not make the journey, the rivalry will be very real for the two urban SUVs from the Stellantis group. By extension, it will also cover the slightly smaller Opel Mokka-e (4.15m), but which still shares the e-CMP technical platform. Like the DS3 Crossback E-Tense, which will soon move to the restyling box, the same size as the German but with a higher positioning.

The Jeep Avenger, which will be offered only in electric version, with no heat engine in the program, will still stand out from the aforementioned cousins for its all-wheel drive.. A very legitimate resource for the American brand whose notoriety in terms of crossing ability is well established. Jeep has not yet specified how it intends to animate the rear axle of the Avenger. The most probable hypothesis, however, would be the addition of a second electric motor placed on the rear axle. It is difficult to imagine a profound transformation of the technical platform with the passage of a mechanical transmission shaft to the center of the floor. It would be too expensive and would not satisfy the cost-breaker who is Carlos Tavares, the great boss of Stellantis.

Furthermore, for the moment, the technical data sheet of the Jeep Avenger has not been communicated. But, again, in all likelihood, the Peugeot e-2008’s 136hp engine and 50kWh battery catches up with it. However, a variant of around 160 hp is also possible, which will be launched by the Peugeot e-308, e-408 and Opel Astra-e. If only to compensate for the overweight associated with all-wheel drive.

Hyundai Kona, the ideal challenger

For the Jeep Avenger, the most serious challenger will undoubtedly be the Hyundai Kona, whose second version is approaching.. The current one launched in the summer of 2018 and then restyled at the beginning of 2021 offers a 100% electric variant available in two versions. The entry-level offers 135 hp and a 39.2 kWh battery for 305 km of range, while the more efficient version has 204 hp and a 64 kWh accumulator that allow it to travel up to 484 km. In both cases, the torque value is 395 Nm and the maximum speed is limited to 167 km / h. But the Kona Electric, which is limited to a pure traction architecture, shares its technical base with the Kia Soul EV whose range values are between 277 and 452 km. And for its part, the Chinese brand MG offers the ZS in a 100% electric version. Its range leaves the choice between two engine powers: 156 and 177 hp and two battery capacities, 51 or 70 kWh which respectively allow 320 or 440 km of autonomy.

Introduced last April, the Smart # 1 will hit the French market in January 2023. It is significantly more powerful than its rivals with 272 horsepower distilled to the rear wheels. Its battery with a capacity of 66 kWh allows between 420 and 440 km of autonomy. As standard, it has an on-board battery charger capable of receiving up to 22 kW in alternating current and up to 150 kW in direct current!

And as if that weren’t enough, a powerful 428 hp Brabus version is supplied as a reinforcement. Finally, Smart, now owned by the Chinese manufacturer Geely, owner of Volvo, the latter will double the number 1 under its label in 2023. This model will become its entry level with the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
