World Championships – Julian Alaphilippe will be there to defend his world title

Relief for the Blues! Reigning double world champion Julian Alaphilippe will travel to Australia to compete in the online race for the World Cup on 25 September. “Alaf ‘” crashed during the eleventh stage of the last Tour of Spain causing a dislocation of the right shoulder and leaving the tricolor selection uncertain about his presence. But the first reassuring exams allowed him to quickly resume training and thus prepare for the defense of his two titles or the conquest of a third that would have been historic.

So much to say immediately, a selection with and without Julian Alaphilippe would not have had the same ambitions. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl driver is probably the only French driver who can race for the rainbow jersey, especially since Benoît Cosnefroy, the other fit boxer of the tricolor clan (winner of the Quebec GP), is not in the game. For Thomas Voeckler, the coach, carrying Alaphilippe does not represent a big risk. As defending champion, he is out of the eighth odds for a nation like France.

A route that corresponds to Alaphilippe … without being perfect

The Wollongong route, in south-east Australia, corresponds to the qualities of an Alaphilippe even if making a difference will not be easy. On the final circuit, 17.1 kilometers (12 laps), it will be necessary to traverse Mount Pleasant, a 1.1km climb at 7.7% on average with a 14% pass before reaching the finish line eight kilometers further on. A configuration reminiscent of Alaphilippe’s titles at Imola in 2020 then Louvain in 2021 but with a little less difficulty.

Irresistible Alaphilippe: Relive his decisive attack 17km from the finish

At his side Alaphilippe will have a team full of talents including the French champion Florian Sénéchal but also Romain Bardet, Valentin Madouas or the new flag Pavel Sivakov. Christophe Laporte, in excellent shape in 2022 and notably winner of a stage of the Tour de France, could be a leading replacement, especially in the event of a sprint finish in a small group.

The selection of the Blues for the World Cup:

  • Bruno Armirail
  • Giuliano Alaphilippe
  • Romain Bardet
  • Remi Cavagna
  • Cristoforo Laporte
  • Valentino Madouas
  • Quentin Pacher
  • Florian Senechal
  • Pavel Sivakov
